Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902, in the state of Missouri. In his younger years, his parents divorced and Hughes went to live with his grandmother. After Hughes was thirteen he went back to live with his mother and her new husband in Lincoln, Illinois. It was in Lincoln that Hughes discovered his love for poetry. After Hughes graduated high school he spent a year at Columbia University in New York followed by many different odd jobs until 1924 when he settled in Washington D.C. In D.C. Hughes published his first book and soon after finished school at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. After completing his degree Hughes quickly became a prolific writer, creating more and more novels, short stories, and poems that would be looked at for generations to come. Hughes remained active in literature until his unfortunate death due to complications from cancer at the age of 65 on May 22, 1967.
About the Author
I am a student currently enrolled in classes at Middle College at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee. I have been attending for about a semester now and in one of my favorite classes lies the purpose behind this website. In my English class I was assigned a poetry project focusing on one of four poets. I chose Langston Hughes because I knew the least about him out of the four poets I was allowed to choose from. I was interested in the works of someone who was unfamiliar to me and as such I chose to review the works of this famous and inspiring author and poet. On this website I hope to further inform others who may not have as much information on this inspiring man available to them. I wish to spread the word on the lifetime accomplishments of this prolific Harlem Renaissance writer. I wish to tell the story of Langston Hughes.
